**DeVane book states that Thomas DeVane left France for the American colonies. Margaret was prohibited from sailing on the ship with him, so she cut her hair and wore boys’ clothing and sailed with Thomas as his page (boy servant). They landed in NC.
Said that Margaret may have been the niece of Louis II Bourbon-Conde (Great Conde). If so then his parents would have to be her Grandparents. Knowing this maybe tracing back to Louis I and his brother Antoine, who fathered Henry IV, King of France. May tell who Margaret’s parents were. Louis II did have a brother, Armand Bourbon-Conti and a sister, Genevieve Bouron-Conde. Armand did not have a daughter named Margaret, and Genevieve had a child from an affair with Francois VI, while married to Henri II d’Orleans. Maybe this child is Margaret?
**After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, by King Louis of France, in 1685, many of the Protestants and Huguenots fled France for their lives. As an underworld of feudal estate owners who were Protestants, having been disenfranchised, they were very bitter. There was much killing of both Catholics and Protestants, which wete the seeds of the later French Revolution. Thomas DeVane, his wife Margaret Conde, and Thomas’ brother James DeVane Sr. was granted by patent from the British government, first in 1734 and until 1756 had granted 1840 acres in New Hanover, North Carolina. He was a very large plantation owner and owner of many slaves. Source: DeVane Family Records; By: Roberta M. Cobb; Plant City, Florida October 12, 1968.
